Saving energy costs at home

- Heating system
The recommended temperature for your thermostat is between 18°C and 21°C.
Turning down your thermostat by just one degree can save you up to £65 a year.
Install low energy light bulbs (LED light bulbs are best). These last much longer and will save you more money over time.
Only turn on lights when you need them and remember to switch them off again when you leave a room.
Consider using a lower wattage bulb required to meet the rooms lighting needs.
Make the most of natural light. Open curtains and blinds during daylight hours.
Lowering your water temperature to 60°C will still be safe to use and will save energy.
Don’t let the taps run when brushing your teeth.
Find out from your water supplier if you can save money by having a water meter installed. Ask your supplier about any free water saving gadgets they may offer.
When bathing or showering, close the bathroom door and open a window to allow excess moisture to escape instead of spreading throughout the house. If you have a damp home it will take longer to heat.
When washing up, use a bowl rather than leave the hot water running.
Use your washing machine at cooler temperatures – most modern fabrics and detergents are designed to be washed at cooler temperatures. Also ensure you are washing a full load.
Only boil as much water in the kettle as you need and descale regularly. Your kettle is one of the highest energy using appliances in your kitchen.
Put lids on pans when cooking as this will help keep heat in the pan.
Look for energy ratings when buying new appliances – electrical appliances such as ovens, dishwashers, dryers and fridges all now have an EU energy label which indicates how efficient (or inefficient) they are.
- Living room
Close internal doors to keep rooms warmer and remember to shut any windows before you adjust your heating.
Turn off appliances on standby and switch off items at the wall socket at night for non-essential items.
Close curtains when it starts getting dark and tuck them behind curtains to keep your home warmer.
Consider the size of your TV – the larger the screen the more energy it uses. Most modern electricals come with different energy settings – adjust them to a suitable level.
